I took this photo at the same cemetary in Salem, Massachusetts that the supposed witches are buried at in January 2003. It's kind of hard to tell what it says so here it is:

It seems the earlier a gravemarker or mausoleum was produced, the more impressive it is.

Im guessing that's a slate facing over limestone or possibly mortar. The oldest headstones I've ever seen were in a Charleston, SC churchyard. They were from the 1730s or 40s, slate, and had similar stylistic elements to this one.

That's really great artistry when one considers that in puritan New England back in the late 17th century they probably had a very small pool of artistically skilled stonemasons.
